Society for the Performing Arts’ 2010-11 Season is steeped in magic: from the illusion of MOMIX’s ethereal Botanica to the mystery of Zulu harmonizing as only Ladysmith Black Mambazo can deliver. Many would say that only a few moments of listening to Yo-Yo Ma at the cello are sheer magic; how about an entire evening with Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble? Ranging from musical theater to Latin jazz and from cutting-edge contemporary dance to rock-and-roll, the 21 events of SPA’s “Experience the Magic” season represent the organization’s boldest, most eclectic programming ever.

For the upcoming season, the magic of illusion will underscore a number of events including The Peking Acrobats, which will feature daring maneuvers and live music by the eight-member Women’s Peace Orchestra of China; Diavolo and its high-flying dancers, gymnasts and actors in a new work titled Fearful Symmetries; and Blue Man Group, best known for its trademark party atmosphere created by three silent, blue characters who combine comedy, music and multimedia theatrics to produce a totally unique form of entertainment!

From Cuba's legendary performer Omara Portuonodo to Equatorial Guinea-born vocalist Buika, who hails from Mallorca and blends Spanish copla, flamenco, jazz, Cuban music, soul and the blues, the 2010-2011 Season has a truly international flavor with a nod to the exotic. The sensational Doc Severinsen, who now resides in San Miguel de Allende, and his El Ritmo de la Vida Jazz Ensemble will perform classical Spanish music with a jazz flair alongside the music of the movies and Latino ballads. And then there is the sensual, truly multicultural Compagnie La Baraka, direct from Lyon, France and led by Artistic Director Abou Lagraa in the new work A World in Itself set to live music played by The Debussy Quartet.

New this year, if you order seven or more events as part of your subscription, you will receive a FREE pair of tickets. Of course, certain restrictions apply. H-E-B Performance Prelude

“One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years,” said New York Post of The 5 Browns, adding, “When these kids do Rachmaninoff, they’ll make you forget about Marshall amps.” A youthful quintet of brothers and sisters, each a Juilliard-trained virtuoso concert pianist, The 5 Browns swept the classical world in 2005 with the release of their self-titled first recording for RCA Red Seal. That release landed them at the top of the weekly Billboard charts and, at the end of the year, as one of the Top Classical Artists of 2005. With Browns in Blue, released in 2007, The 5 Browns had already delivered on their dream of waking up classical music and introducing it to the widest, largest and most excited audience they can find. The 5 Browns’ latest album and PBS television special focus on timeless music from the cinema. Flawless in precision and steeped in passion, the Browns stun critics and shatter the preconceptions of those who think classical music inscrutable or intimidating. Needless to say, they are a force to be reckoned with.

For their upcoming SPA concert, they’ve planned an unbeatable program: alongside Rachmaninov, Reich, Bach, Brahms, Cowell, and Liszt, The 5 Browns are playing memorable music from the movies! And some of our favorites, too: Elmer Bernstein’s To Kill a Mockingbird: “Main Title,” Bernard Herrmann’s Hitchcock movie themes, Dario Marianelli’s Atonement, and John Williams’s Star Wars.
