Movement Toward Literacy
Society for the Performing Arts supports exploration of the performing arts and creative writing as a way to enhance an individual’s ability to understand, interpret and appreciate written text and spoken words.
Movement Toward Literacy (MTL) initiatives utilize the power of the performing arts to teach components of literacy such as active listening, articulate speech, coherent writing and reading comprehension.
In collaboration with Writers in the Schools, classroom and after school workshops will focus on the composition of original poems & monologues, the interpretation of poetry and the creation of movement and choreography inspired by metaphors, imagery and poetic language.
Student participants in MTL initiatives will be invited to perform original slam poetry, moving choral readings and unique poetry-inspired dance compositions as part of the H-E-B Performance Prelude series.
In addition to crafting poems and studying dance on campus, participants will have monthly opportunities for creative expression with Writers in the Schools during their Meta-Fourth Friday workshops. Click here for more details about Meta-Fourth Fridays.
