Hidden Inside Mountains is a film of short stories about nature, artifice and dreams. Located in a fictitious world of theatrical spaces, the stories unfold through music, gesture, text passages and the poetry of variously juxtaposed, evocative visual images. Both joy and loss are expressed in the film’s dreamlike texts, written by Laurie Anderson and presented in both Japanese and English. The film’s haunting music features violins, bells, dog barks and melody as well as many of Laurie Anderson’s signature electronic sounds.

Commissioned by EXPO 2005 Aichi, Japan, Hidden Inside Mountains is a high definition video that debuted in Japan at WORLD EXPO 2005 on the largest high definition Astrovision screen in the world and features an original score written and recorded by Laurie Anderson with additional vocals by singer/performer Antony (of Antony and the Johnson).

The screening of Hidden Inside Mountains in Houston is made possible by The Menil Collection, Aurora Picture Show and Society for the Performing Arts.

SPA and the Jewish Community Center of Houston invite the general public to a free screening of Alberstein’s documentaryToo Early To Be Quiet, Too Late To Sing (1999) in

Yiddish and Hebrew with English subtitles on November 19. Following the film, Alberstein will answer questions with a reception to follow.

A flourishing Yiddish culture of poetry, music, drama, and literature came to an abrupt end with the Holocaust. A small core of survivors continued to create in Yiddish after World War II, and now only a few Yiddish poets remain, most of them in Israel. Chava Alberstein set out to interview them, to hear their poems and stories. Along the way she sings a superb collection of Yiddish folk songs. Too Early To Be Quiet, Too Late To Sing is a personal film, in which Alberstein gives expression to her endless love of poetry and Yiddish.
