Hailing from Madrid, Compañía Nacional de Danza is led by Artistic Director José Carlos Martínez and it embraces both new and international creations, drawing in new audiences and boosting the company’s national and international projection. Compañía Nacional de Danza in collaboration with award-winning choreographer, Johan Inger, bring the mesmerizing masterpiece, Carmen, to Houston. The story witnessed through the eyes of a young watcher reveals the tale stripped to its mythic and universal elements of passion and violence. He opted to have a minimalistic version Carmen that centers on a plain and open stage, with clear-cut, solid and honest visuals and forms. Inger’s fresh take on Carmen allows the audience to interpret the story using their own imagination.

Today, the main company is comprised of 18 dancers with unparalleled versatility and virtuosity that will be on full display as they perform works from choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Crystal Pite and Nacho Duato. One of the only U.S. dance companies to operate year-round, Hubbard Street continues to produce bold and passionate performances in Chicago, and tour domestically as well as internationally.

Ballet Hispánico, a “strong ambassador of not just Latino culture but of dance itself” (Broadway World), brings its bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance with an all-Latina choreographer program for the 2017-2018 season. The engagement features Michelle Manzanales’s Con Brazos Abiertos, an exploration of iconic Mexican symbols that Manzanales was reluctant to embrace as a Mexican-American child growing up in Texas; Línea Recta by Belgo-Colombian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, a work pairing the hallmark passion of flamenco dance with highly inventive and intricate partnering, set to music by flamenco guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel; and Catorce Dieciséis by Tania Pérez-Salas, one of Mexico’s most noted contemporary choreographers. This program draws upon the innovation and versatility of one of the world’s premier dance companies to capture contemporary Latino culture through movement.
