Tudor Family Dance Series

The Tudor Family Dance Series presents dance companies of the highest caliber. Each dance company selected for the season has cutting-edge repertories, phenomenal dancers and groundbreaking choreography. An evening at one of Society for the Performing Arts’ Tudor Family Dance Series shows will be a night to remember.

This season’s performances display electrifying new techniques and modern choreography, while offering a cultural diversity that will resonate with the greater Houston community. Most of the performances will take place at Jones Hall, the Theater District’s largest venue, as a reflection of the growing interest in contemporary dance.

Dorrance Dance – “ETM: Double Down”

ETM: Double Down

Dorrance Dance is an award-winning tap dance company based out of New York City, combining classic tap with more contemporary styles for more interesting and conceptual performances that aim to expand the audience of tap dancing. ETM: Double Down utilizes original tap “instruments” designed by 2014 Bessie Award Winner Nicholas Van Young, the score is not simply danced to, but danced BY the company. With the right programming, the sound of a single footfall can range from a snare drum to a note on an arpeggio.

Beijing Dance Theater – “Hamlet”


Beijing Dance Theater, one of China’s most distinguished dance companies, with its stunning dancers, returns to the U.S. with Hamlet. In 2006, FENG Xiogang invited WANG Yuanyuan to work on his film The Banquet, based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This inspired WANG to create a ballet telling the story of Hamlet through the eyes the melancholy prince, who struggles with power, family, revenge and love.

Pilobolus is an internationally renowned movement company.  For 45 years they have tested the limit of human physicality, exploring the power of connected bodies.

In 2009, Pilobolus created Shadowland, the first show of its kind, which has since performed in 32 countries, for over a million people.  Now Pilobolus is proud to present an all-new Shadow adventure.

Shadowland: The New Adventure uses Pilobolus’ exploration of mixed media to tell a love story about two people and their quest to save a magical bird.

Employing animation, video and live shadow theater, this madcap adventure dips its toe into the genres of science fiction, film noir and romantic comedy.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet

Combining technical precision, power and passion, Complexions Contemporary Ballet transcends tradition in a groundbreaking mix of styles ranging from ballet to hip hop.  Founded by former members of Alvin Ailey, Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden, the company has been featured several times on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance; this season the company brings an exhilarating program set to music from Bach to Bowie.  Stardust is an “utterly transfixing” tribute to the life and music of David Bowie, full of glitter and glam.
